Phần 1: Giới thiệu

Quy trình tuyển sinh đại học, đặc biệt là vào các trường Ivy League, thường khiến nhiều thí sinh cảm thấy như đang bước vào một “hộp đen” bí ẩn – nơi mọi quyết định dường như được đưa ra mà không rõ tiêu chí cụ thể. Với mức độ cạnh tranh cực cao và tiêu chuẩn đánh giá phức tạp, việc hiểu được cách các trường này lựa chọn ứng viên là một thách thức không nhỏ đối với cả học sinh và phụ huynh.

Mặc dù hồ sơ học tập và hoạt động ngoại khóa cung cấp cái nhìn tổng quan về thành tích của học sinh, bài luận cá nhân và các bài luận bổ sung lại là nơi giúp thí sinh thể hiện những khía cạnh sâu sắc hơn như cá tính, sở thích riêng, giá trị sống, hoặc những trải nghiệm đáng nhớ mà không thể hiện được qua bảng điểm hay danh hiệu. Đây chính là cơ hội để học sinh kể câu chuyện riêng của mình và tạo dấu ấn với hội đồng tuyển sinh.

Tuy mỗi trường có tiêu chí riêng, nhưng nhìn chung, các đại học có tuyển chọn gắt gao nhất như Ivy League đều tìm kiếm những học sinh thể hiện được đam mê thực sự, tư duy độc lập, tinh thần lãnh đạo, sáng tạo và đặc biệt là trí tò mò học thuật sâu sắc. Những yếu tố này không chỉ khiến hồ sơ nổi bật, mà còn cho thấy thí sinh có tiềm năng đóng góp tích cực cho cộng đồng học thuật trong tương lai.

Hãy nhớ rằng hội đồng tuyển sinh sẽ đánh giá bài luận như một phần trong tổng thể hồ sơ chứ không phải yếu tố quyết định duy nhất. Một bài luận ấn tượng không đảm bảo được nhận, đặc biệt tại các trường như Ivy League, nơi tiêu chí tuyển sinh rất khắt khe và luôn thay đổi theo từng năm. Chính vì vậy, chúng tôi đã tổng hợp nhiều bài luận thực tế từ những học sinh từng được nhận vào Ivy League và các trường Ivy+ như Stanford, MIT, UChicago, để rút ra những chiến lược viết bài luận hiệu quả nhất dành cho nhóm ứng viên xuất sắc.

Phần 2: Tìm hiểu đề bài luận tuyển sinh của các trường Ivy League

Hàng năm, đề bài luận phụ của các trường Ivy League thường thay đổi đôi chút, nhưng vẫn xoay quanh các chủ đề quen thuộc nhằm giúp học sinh thể hiện chiều sâu cá nhân. Chúng tôi đã tổng hợp các đề luận tiêu biểu từ năm học 2018–2019 đến nay, giúp học sinh hiểu rõ dạng bài và định hướng cách viết hiệu quả. 

Ngay sau đây là danh sách các đề luận thực tế từ từng trường trong Ivy League và sau đó, chúng tôi sẽ gợi ý cách xây dựng bài viết linh hoạt, sáng tạo với từng loại đề bài.

(Lưu ý: Đại học Cornell không được liệt kê vì đề bài thay đổi theo từng khoa hoặc chương trình đào tạo.)

Bài luận của Đại học Princeton:

Ngoài bài luận chính của Common App, thí sinh cần viết một bài luận khoảng 500 từ (tối đa 650 từ, tối thiểu 250 từ) dựa trên một trong các chủ đề gợi ý. Mục tiêu là chia sẻ về một người, sự kiện hoặc trải nghiệm đã giúp bạn xác định một giá trị cá nhân hoặc thay đổi cách bạn nhìn nhận thế giới. Không được lặp lại nội dung từ bài luận Common App.

Một số đề bài bao gồm:

  1. Tell us about a person who has influenced you in a significant way.
  2. “One of the great challenges of our time is that the disparities we face today have more complex causes and point less straightforwardly to solutions.” Omar Wasow, assistant professor of politics, Princeton University. This quote is taken from Professor Wasow’s January 2014 speech at the Martin Luther King Day celebration at Princeton University.
  3. “Culture is what presents us with the kinds of valuable things that can fill a life. And insofar as we can recognize the value in those things and make them part of our lives, our lives are meaningful.” Gideon Rosen, Stuart Professor of Philosophy and chair, Department of Philosophy, Princeton University.
  4. Using a favorite quotation from an essay or book you have read in the last three years as a starting point, tell us about an event or experience that helped you define one of your values or changed how you approach the world. Please write the quotation, title and author at the beginning of your essay.

  1. Imagine you’ve struck a deal with the Dean of Admissions himself, Dean Nondorf. This bond is grounded on the condition that you’ll obtain a blank, 8.5 x 11 piece of paper, and draw, write, sketch, shade, stencil, paint etc., anything and everything you want on it; your only limitations will be the boundaries of both sides on the single page. Now the catch… your submission, for the rest of your life, will always be the first thing anyone you meet for the first time will see. Whether it’s at a job interview, a blind date, arrival at your first Humanities class, before you even say, “hey,” they’ll already have seen your page, and formulated that first impression.
